Khorana, Har Gobind
(n. 9 ene. 1922, Raipur, India).

Bioquímico estadounidense nacido en India. Obtuvo su Ph.D. en la Universidad de Liverpool. Más tarde fue docente en Canadá y EE.UU., y desde 1970 en el MIT. En 1968 compartió el Premio Nobel con Marshall Warren Nirenberg y Robert William Holley por las investigaciones que contribuyeron a demostrar cómo los componentes genéticos del núcleo celular controlan la síntesis de proteínas. Su aporte consistió en sintetizar pequeñas moléculas de ácido nucleico, cuya estructura exacta era conocida. Sus ácidos nucleicos sintéticos, al combinarlos con los materiales apropiados, causaron la síntesis de proteínas, tal como en la célula; la comparación de estas proteínas con el ácido nucleico reveló qué porciones del ácido nucleico eran los códigos para cada parte de la proteína. En 1970 preparó la primera copia artificial de un gen de levadura.
